Food For Thought (Bible Morsel #5)

Why did God authorize the killing of innocent children?

(Joshua 6:21, 27) “They exterminated everything in the city with the sword: man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep and ass. The Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land”.

Does God authorize the killing of innocent children today? How would you support your answer?

Who wrote the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy)?

Some say Moses wrote the entire content of the books based on:

(Deuteronomy 31:9) Moses wrote down this Teaching and gave it to the priests, sons of Levi…

(Deuteronomy 1:1) These are the words that Moses addressed to all Israel…

Some say there were other authors based on:

(Numbers 12:3) Now Moses was a very humble man, more so than any other man on earth.

(Deuteronomy 34:5-6) So Moses the servant of the LORD died there, in the land of Moab, at the command of the LORD. He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab; near Beth-peor; and no one knows his burial place to this day.

(Deuteronomy 34:10) Never again did there arise in Israel a prophet like Moses–whom the LORD singled out, face to face.

According to God, if a man and woman have sex during the woman’s menstrual cycle they both suffer dire consequences.

(Leviticus 20:18) “If a man lies with a woman in her infirmity and uncovers her nakedness, he has laid bare her flow and she has exposed her blood flow; both of them shall be cut off from among their people.”

Why is such practice deserving of punishment? Does God expect people to abide by this today? If no, why did God’s will change on this issue? How would you support your answer?

*I’ll be posting Food For Thought once a week. Remember, these are questions that persons of reason have. If you want to share the Christian message of salvation you must be aware of what the Bible says in its entirety. Just memorizing and quoting select verses is not enough. Many nonbelievers are well-versed in the Bible and it’s one of the reasons they are not believers. If you believe that you’re created in the image of God, then there’s no reason you can’t supplement your faith with reason and intellect. Engage the mind that was given to you.

According to  Matthew (Chapter 27:50-51) and Mark (Chapter 15:37-38) the veil/curtain of the temple was ripped in two after Jesus died.

According to Luke (Chapter 23:44-46) the veil/curtain of the temple was ripped in two before Jesus died.

Which order of events actually happened? Why does there appear to be a contradiction? Does it matter if there are different accounts?
